Sunday, the 3rd of November, saw 7 bikes with 7 riders plus 1 pillion depart from our Ashby de la Zouch meeting point on a dry but chilly morning.
A steady two-hour ride through Leicestershire, Warwickshire, and into Northamptonshire was enjoyed, albeit with a few roads having ‘agricultural’ debris spread around! Upon arrival at Stowe House & Gardens, we parked up, met an 8th member plus pillion, and walked in to view the ‘For Your Tomorrow” Day 80 memorial installation created by the Oxford-based ’Standing with Giants’ team.
It was a reflective and moving experience to see 1,475 silhouettes representing the servicemen killed on the 6th of June during the first day of the D-Day landing.
There are also two special figures in red of nurses who were also killed while performing their duties on an evacuation hospital ship. (Their picture was taken at the British Normandy Memorial above the landing beaches earlier this year.)
After a few hours at Stowe, we headed away with our thoughts for the ride ’north’.
